Why measure

Your standards live on paper. Your guests meet them in person.

Satisfaction surveys tell you how people felt. A mystery shopper tells you what actually happened, in the same order, against the same standard, every time.

It shows the gap

The distance between what your brand promises and what a guest experiences at the front desk, the till, the first tee or the table.

It holds standards in place

Staff who know a shopper may visit at any time keep standards consistent, not only on the days someone senior is watching.

It directs your training

Scores by touchpoint show exactly where education will change results, so training is aimed instead of generic.

It links to spend

RCA's aim in every engagement is a stronger employee connection to culture and a better per-head spend as guests feel more value at each step.

Ways to shop

Reach the experience wherever it happens.

Match the method to how your customers actually reach you. Most programmes combine two.

Our shoppers

Matched to your market, not drawn from a stranger pool.

RCA selects shoppers from its own mystery shopper community and matches them to your target market. A boutique hotel, a fashion retailer and a golf estate each hear from someone who genuinely fits their guest.

Profile matched

Shoppers are chosen to reflect the people you want to serve, so feedback comes from the right point of view.

Briefed and calibrated

Every shopper completes your scenario and scorecard briefing before the first visit.

Anonymous to your team

Reports describe the experience and the role involved. Findings are used to coach, not to expose.

Reporting

Results you can read in a minute and act on in a week.

Findings are delivered through FeedForward, RCA's measurement and reporting platform: scores by section, change over time, and the shopper's own words.

Destination diningCompleted

Benchmarking a waterfront dining precinct

The challenge

A major Cape Town waterfront destination wanted to know how its restaurants compared with each other, not only with their own targets.

What RCA did

RCA ran two mystery guest audits per restaurant and grouped venues into categories, so fine dining was compared with fine dining and casual with casual. Every venue received a score and a rank.

What the data showed

Scores within a single category varied widely, with fine dining venues ranging from 71.5% to 93.7% across the two audits. The smart casual category alone covered 28 ranked venues. The fine dining average moved from 82.8% in the first audit to 85.4% in the second.

Figures are from the 2023 final scores.

Quick-service restaurantsWave 1 completed

Comparing two national quick-service brands side by side

The challenge

A quick-service brand wanted an independent view of how its customer experience compared with its closest competitor, across store types and times of day.

What RCA did

Matched shoppers visited both brands across drive-thru, urban, suburban, highway and mall food court locations, and at five dayparts from breakfast to late night. The scorecard covered speed, order accuracy, cleanliness, staff friendliness and product.

What the data showed

The competitor led overall satisfaction at 8.2 against 7.5 out of 10. The gaps were operational: average drive-thru time of 225 seconds against 285, order accuracy of 94% against 88%, and a cleanliness pass rate of 85% against 72%. The client led on food taste at 88% satisfaction. Afternoon cleanliness was the widest gap in the day, at 90% against 65%.

Personal careThree waves

Finding the commercial behaviours a salon group was missing

The challenge

A salon group with 16 salons wanted to understand why service scores looked healthy while rebooking and add-on sales did not.

What RCA did

RCA measured three waves across all 16 salons and reported the results in a dashboard that separated service behaviours from commercial behaviours.

What the data showed

The service basics scored well. The commercial behaviours were the critical gap: rebooking scored 8.3% and after-care advice 19.1%. That gave the group two specific behaviours to coach.

Training on the two behaviours is the natural next step.

Country clubOngoing

One view of member, guest and staff feedback at a country club

The challenge

A Gauteng country club collected feedback in many places, including surveys, QR feedback, Google reviews and audits, and nobody saw it together.

What RCA did

RCA brought mystery guest audits, QR code feedback live since November 2022, member surveys from 2022 and 2026, staff satisfaction and Google reviews into one dashboard, with a customer journey standards tab.

What the data showed

In the 2026 member survey, interim results showed overall value at 3.90 out of 5 and likelihood to recommend at 3.86, with 71% rating 4 or 5. Course marshals were the lowest-rated touchpoint at 3.38. The top investment priority was improving the clubhouse, restaurant and bar. The survey is still collecting responses.

Interim 2026 survey results, so the figures may move.

Mystery shopping works when it is honest, evidence-based and used to develop people. Industry codes of practice emphasise accurate reporting and ethical conduct, and RCA's programmes follow the same principles.

Scenarios are legal, ethical and safe. Reports are quality-checked before delivery. Results are used to coach and educate staff, which is why every cycle ends with a review, not a verdict.

Questions

What clients ask before they start.

What is mystery shopping?

A matched shopper experiences your service as a customer would and reports against your scorecard, whether the venue is a hotel, a golf club, a restaurant or a store.

How many visits do we need?

That depends on how many locations you operate and how quickly you want to see change. A single venue often starts quarterly. A national retail footprint is usually scheduled in waves so every store is measured on the same basis.

Can you measure more than in-person visits?

Yes. We run on-site, online and call centre shops, and can pair them with QR code guest feedback so you see both the guest's own view and the shopper's audit view.

Who writes the scorecard?

You and RCA, together, in the Define stage. It is built from your own brand standards, so staff are measured on what you have already asked them to do.

How are results shared with staff?

Through a review session and the FeedForward dashboard. Results feed directly into the education plan, so the next round of training is aimed at the lowest-scoring touchpoints.

Do you work outside the Western Cape?

Yes. RCA is based in Cape Town and has measured venues across South Africa, including Gauteng and Mpumalanga.

Is RCA a mystery shopper provider and supplier?

Yes. RCA is a South African mystery shopper provider and supplier. We recruit and brief the shoppers, design the scorecard with you, quality-check every report and deliver the results, so you deal with one accountable supplier from brief to action plan.

Do you offer mystery guest programmes for golf resorts and restaurants?

Yes. Mystery guest and mystery shopper describe the same method. We run mystery guest programmes for golf resorts, hotels, restaurants and other food and beverage venues, covering booking, arrival, service, food and beverage, and departure.
